HDR you ready to rumble?

I was looking through some photos online last night and saw some amazing effects that were like nothing I’d ever seen before. So I looked into it and it’s called HDR (High Dynamic Range) Photography. This article explains it pretty well and it turns out there’s a massive Flickr pool devoted to it too. Obviously some are pretty ropey as it depends how well you use the software, but it gives a general idea of how incredible they can look. Apparently you should bracket exposures for proper HDR, then the software merges them together for some real magical-looking craziness, but I haven’t done that yet and you can get a good approximation anyway using tone-mapping, which approximates the process by squeezing more out of your usual 16-bit RAW image. I’ve had a go on some more photos from last weekend and here are the patchy results. First the RAWs, then the HDRed-up painting-looking ones.

Wuk at the wikkle wams

Well, finally, spring has started to spring AT EASTER. So snapped some sheeps (probably too many sheeps), an abandoned house in a field, an abandoned caravan and a tree. Inspired. Well at least I found something to point my camera at for a change.

Lunchtime Hilton

Got out for a few minutes at lunch to photograph that bloody great monolith of a hideous monstrosity of a silly big pile of greeny glass that’s towering over all of Manchester like some massive shiny robot monster. You know the one. It’s going to look rubbish. And these shots are over processed – I know this – so sue me. I like them.

Who needs a tilt/shift?

I’d been marvelling at some fantastic tilt/shift pictures at work recently, here and here. Seems Craig Robinson had been doing the same – along, it now seems, with half the internet, only he’d decided to try faking them. And why not? Saves about a grand on a T/S lens. So I’ve had a VERY quick go on a couple of mine. It’s surprisingly model-like, so I might take some specifically for this. Soon. When I get the chance. Here they are:

Water way to have a good time

Geese. Thousands of ‘em. There’s a waterpark near where I live, so off I trotted on my pushbike on Saturday, camera in tow. The sun put in an appearance, which helped. Thank you sun. Very obliging, those geese. Swans were bastards though. Hissing bloody swan bastards.

Went to see King Kong today and I felt for the big fella. Then went and got trapped on the hills by the snow and ice with my brother and had to slide home on foot like bumbling fools. No way on earth was I gonna let snow get one over on me. No sirree. So the next day headed out to the Derbyshire dams with my new toy. I love my new toy. It’s groovy. She cool. Some of these photos are rubbish though. Must brush up on technique. Must, must, must.
